Magnification for EAN-13 and EAN-8 Bar Codes

EAN stands for European Article Number.

Size is an important factor that determined the scanning rate of a bar code symbol.

Size of the EAN bar code is known as magnification. Magnification can vary within certain limits measured against the normal size of 100%. If a bar code is not within these limits, it may not scan. Any reduction in magnification below the normal size may reduce reliability of scanning. Selecting a magnification factor higher than the theoretical minimum can always enhance reliability of scanning. Therefore, it is advisable to print the highest magnification possible on a packaging. Companies are also advised to discuss with their printers before deciding on the bar code size. The artwork designer must also work closely with the printer to ensure sufficient space is reserved for the bar code on the packaging.
